10 Laundry Tips for Kids with Allergies

Caring for a child with allergies can feel like a full-time job, and something as simple as laundry can make a big difference in their comfort and health. From detergents to drying methods, small changes in your routine can help reduce allergens and prevent skin irritation.

Here’s a practical guide to making laundry safer for kids with allergies.

1. Choose Hypoallergenic Detergents

Regular detergents often contain fragrances, dyes and harsh chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin. Our Laundry Detergent Egg is specially designed for those with sensitive skin and allergies. Our new Sensitive Skin range is completely fragrance free and Allergy UK approved so you wash your laundry with ease.

2. Avoid Fabric Softeners and Dryer Sheets

While they may make clothes feel softer, fabric softeners and dryer sheets often contain chemicals and fragrances that can trigger allergies. Instead, try natural alternatives like our Dryer Balls. They naturally soften your clothes and reduce creasing. It’s a win win!

3. Wash New Clothes Before Wearing

New clothes can carry residues from manufacturing, including chemicals and dyes. Always wash new items before your child wears them to reduce the risk of skin irritation.

4. Use the Right Water Temperature

Hot water is more effective at removing allergens like dust mites, pollen and pet dander. For items that can handle it, wash at higher temperatures. For delicate fabrics, use warm water and ensure a thorough wash cycle.

5. Double Rinse for Extra Protection

Running an extra rinse cycle helps remove any leftover detergent residue that could irritate your child’s skin. This is especially important if your child has eczema or very sensitive skin.

6. Don’t Overload the Washing Machine

Overloading prevents clothes from being cleaned properly and rinsed thoroughly. Give clothes enough space to move freely so allergens and detergent residues are fully washed away.

7. Dry Clothes Properly

Whenever possible, dry clothes in a dryer rather than outdoors. Hanging clothes outside can expose them to pollen and other airborne allergens. If you prefer air drying, do it indoors in a clean, well-ventilated area.

8. Clean Your Washing Machine Regularly

Residue from detergents and dirt can build up inside your machine, transferring allergens back onto clothes. Run a cleaning cycle regularly using a washing machine cleaner. Our Detox Tablets are perfect for this. They’re designed to clean the hard to reach places, remove limescale and even pollen!

9. Wash Bedding Frequently

Beds can collect dust mites, sweat and allergens quickly. Wash your child’s bedding at least once a week in hot water to keep their sleeping environment clean and comfortable.

10. Store Clothes in a Clean Space

After washing, store clothes in a dry, dust-free environment. Avoid damp areas where mould can grow, as mould spores can trigger allergic reactions.

Laundry may seem routine, but for kids with allergies, it plays a crucial role in daily comfort and health. By choosing gentle products and following a few simple habits, you can significantly reduce exposure to irritants and create a safer environment for your child.

Consistency is key once you build these practices into your routine, they’ll become second nature and help keep your child happy, healthy and itch-free.
