4 Bedding Habits That Can Help Reduce Dust Mites This Allergy Season

With allergy season in full swing, keeping up with your cleaning routine is more important than ever. Since we spend around a third of our lives in bed, making sure your bedding stays clean can help create a fresher, more comfortable sleeping environment, especially if you suffer from dust mite or seasonal allergies.

Here are four simple laundry and bedroom care tips to help reduce dust mites in your bedding and keep sneezing to a minimum.

1.Wash your bedding every week

If you have a dust mite allergy or struggle with seasonal allergies, washing your bedding regularly is one of the most effective ways to reduce allergen build-up.

We recommend washing your sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers at least once a week at 60°C, where the care label allows. Washing at this temperature helps kill dust mites and remove the allergens they leave behind.

If a 60°C wash isn't suitable for your bedding, consider using a laundry detergent that's specially formulated to target allergens. Some people also choose to add a small amount of eucalyptus oil to their wash, although it's important to ensure its suitable for your fabrics and that your skin isn't sensitive to essential oils.

2.Dry your bedding thoroughly, on a high heat

Once your bedding has been washed, make sure it's completely dry before putting it back on the bed. If you're using a tumble dryer, drying on a high heat setting for at least 15 minutes can help eliminate any remaining dust mites.

While tumble drying is convenient, it can also increase your energy bills. That's where our Dryer Balls come in. They're independently tested to reduce drying times by up to 28%, helping you save energy while getting your bedding dry faster.

3.Don’t forget to deep clean your pillow, duvet and mattress

Fresh bedding can only do so much if your pillows, duvet and mattress are harbouring dust mites.

Vacuum your mattress regularly and follow the care instructions for washing pillows and duvets where possible. Rotating and airing them out can also help keep them fresh between washes.

For added protection, consider using allergen-proof mattress and pillow protectors. These create a barrier that helps reduce your exposure to dust mites while you sleep.

4.Keep humidity under control

Dust mites thrive in warm, humid environments, so reducing moisture in your bedroom will help tackle dust mites.

Aim to keep your bedroom's relative humidity below 50%. Opening windows regularly to improve ventilation or using a dehumidifier can help if your room tends to feel damp or humid.

Sleep easier this allergy season

A few simple changes to your laundry routine and bedroom care can make a big difference in reducing dust mite allergens. By washing your bedding regularly, drying it thoroughly, keeping your mattress and pillows clean and controlling humidity, you can create a cleaner, fresher sleeping environment all year round.
