5 Eco-Friendly Habits to Start Ahead of the New Year, Simple Swaps That Make a Big Impact and Save You Money

The lead-up to a new year is the perfect time to reset habits, clear out old routines and set yourself up for a more mindful, eco-friendly lifestyle. Instead of waiting for January 1st, you can start making small, sustainable changes now so they’re already second nature by the time the new year rolls in.

Here are practical, low-effort, planet-friendly habits you can start today that will have a long-term impact on your wallet, home and the environment.

1.Make the switch to reusable

Switching out for reusable solutions is one of the easiest ways to bring a little sustainability to your life. You don’t need to overhaul your whole home; you can start small.

Here are some great early swaps to start your new eco-friendly journey:

  • Reusable water bottles

  • A reusable coffee cup

  • Reusable shopping bags

  • Refillable cleaning bottle spray

2.Low waste bathroom refresh

If you want to tackle your sustainability room by room, the bathroom is a great place to start. Here are a few things to replace:

  • Instead of disposable cotton pads opt for reusable face pads or wipes, our Bamboo Towels are great for this

  • Instead of liquid shower gel, that often comes in bulky plastic bottles, why not make the switch to a bar of soap instead

  • Instead of disposable, plastic razors why not make the switch to metal reusable razors, not only do they help you save money, but they also work a lot better too

3. Start a 5 minute declutter routine

Eco habits aren’t just about shopping less and shopping mindfully. They’re about using what you already have and repurposing things you might not have though you could. Try a 5 minute daily declutter:

  • Sort through a forgotten drawer

  • Use up half-finished products

  • Donate what you don’t use

  • Repurpose your unwanted items

This reduces waste, removes clutter and stops unnecessary buying.

4. Reduce food waste with simple kitchen habits

Did you know that the average four-person household loses around £1,000 per year due to wasted food? If you find little ways that help you manage your food smarter, you could see a real difference in reduced food waste and save money.

  • Freeze any leftovers to have later as a quick meal

  • Freeze your bread

  • Save veggie scraps and offcuts to make your own vegetable stock

  • Store your herbs in water to make them last longer, or plant your own little herb garden

  • Plan meals with what you already have at home and on hand

5. Start supporting sustainable and eco-friendly brands

Another simple yet effective way of implementing eco conscious choices, is swapping out your usual brands for a sustainable alternative. Look out for brands with plastic free packaging, refillable product options, ethically sourced materials and transparent sustainability information.

Here are a few of our favourite brands to help you get started:

Eco-friendly living isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. When you start making these small, practical changes before the new year, you’ll enter January feeling organised, motivated and proud of your new habits. Even one habit a week makes a difference. The planet feels it and so will you.
