Eco-friendly cleaning doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it can start with a few simple swaps using ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen cupboard. These natural alternatives are affordable, effective, and kinder to the planet.
Common Ingredients You Can Use for Cleaning
- White vinegar
- Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)
- Lemon or lemon juice
- Rubbing alcohol
- Essential oils (for fragrance, if suitable for your skin)
Important Things to Know Before You Start Cleaning
Avoid using vinegar on natural stone surfaces.
The acid in white vinegar can etch and permanently dull materials such as granite, quartz, and marble.
Lemons, Lemons & More Lemons
Lemons can do much more than make lemonade. Thanks to their natural antibacterial properties and fresh scent, they’re perfect for a range of cleaning tasks. Here are a couple of our favourites:
Lemon Juice for Shiny Taps
Bring dull taps back to life with nothing more than lemon juice and a Bamboo Kitchen Towel.
Simply squeeze a little lemon juice onto your towel and buff your taps until they shine. It’s a quick and easy way to remove water marks and leave surfaces sparkling.
Cleaning Wooden Chopping Boards
Lemons are also brilliant for cleaning wooden chopping boards.
All you need is:
- Half a lemon
- Coarse salt (fine salt works too)
Sprinkle salt over your chopping board, then rub the lemon over the surface in circular motions. This helps lift stains, neutralise odours, and freshen your board naturally.
Bicarbonate of Soda
Bicarbonate of soda is a fantastic natural deodoriser and gentle cleaning agent. If you enjoy baking, chances are you already have some at home
All-Purpose Cleaning Spray
Make your own multi-purpose cleaner with ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.
You’ll need:
- 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
- 2 teaspoons white vinegar
- 1/4 teaspoon dishwashing liquid
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 2 cups hot water
Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle and shake well. For an extra touch, add a few drops of your favourite essential oil for a fresh scent.
Bicarbonate Cleaning Paste
Looking for a natural alternative to harsh scrubbing products? This simple paste works wonders on sinks, tiles and stubborn marks.
Mix:
- 3 parts bicarbonate of soda

Apply the paste to the surface and leave it for 15–30 minutes before scrubbing with your favourite cloth or sponge.
